Vrijwilligers in strijd tegen HIV/ AIDS
COPAAP (Community Partnership Against AIDS Program) met steun van de stichting Dordrecht-Bamenda, traint vrijwilligers en zorgt dat de HIV-medicijnen in Bamenda maar ook in de afgelegen dorpen er om heen beschikbaar zijn. In de afgelopen jaren heeft Dordrecht bijgedragen aan de koop van twee motorfietsen en twee molens om graan/bonen te malen. Hiermee wordt geld verdient dat gebruikt wordt door de vrijwilligers om hun werk voor mensen met HIV/AIDS goed te doen.

 “I am trained by COPAAP and based in Akum. My main objectives are to educate people to cope with HIV/AIDS and to help reduce the further spread of HIV in the Akum community.Imagine that after a diagnoses you are told you are HIV positive, something you did not expect. At first you are traumatised, frustrated and you even believe that there is no solution. How can you re-adjust your thinking and cope with the shock? How can you have a balanced view of life? Will you succeed in coping with this problem? Well then, these are difficulties which I have to help solve as a counsellor. My challenge is not only to give counselling and stop by,but also to assist the patient with getting the necessary drugs and also with making sure that they follow the directive of their health care agent.
The rate of success depends on the personal commitment of the volunteer to their job and to their clients. As an individual I have helped many cases, such as a couple who were at the point of breaking up. However, today they live happily together. Also many families that seemed to be tearing apart are once again back in unity.
Recently I received a recognition for my work with COPAAP with an award from the organisation Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) to celebrate International Volunteers’ Day 2008 .
Thanks to COPAAP, but also to other NGOs both in Cameroon and abroad.we have been able to fight this pandemic and encourage those who are infected to seek medical help and assure them of love and devotion. However, if you are not infected then you are still affected, because you may lose a friend. We teach ABC – Abstain, Be Faithful or use a Condom.
